Osteoarthritis school
Welcome to the Osteoarthritis school at NIMI - a patient education program!
NIMI has existed for more than 20 years, and has consistently been in the forefront regarding physical activity, health, sports medicine and musculoskeletal disorders. Research shows that physical activity and exercises are the most evidence based treatment for many musculoskeletal disorders and there among osteoarthritis.
Treatment of Osteoarthritis at NIMI
At NIMI you can get professional medical treatment for your hip or knee osteoarthritis. We will design an individual treatment program for you based on your needs and wishes. We are a team of professionals working with patients with hip and knee osteoarthritis and our knowledge is based on the newest research and clinical experience.
Physical therapy
After you have received the diagnosis of hip or knee osteoarthritis confirmed by an x-ray by your medical doctor, you will be referred to active treatment including a Osteoarthritis school - a patient education program. The physical therapist will examine you carefully to determine the stage of your osteoarthritis and what clinical dysfunctions you might have. The result of the examination will be a foundation for the treatment. The treatment is individualized for every patient and will mainly consist of information and physical activity/exercises, but manual treatment may be considered if needed.
You will have two sessions with your physical therapist for guidance and instruction before you continue your exercise program at home, outdoors or in a health club. It is very important to keep the muscles and joints active to increase function and decrease pain. You will have regular contact with your physical therapist either at the clinic, by e-mail or on the phone. After approximately 3 months you will have enough knowledge to be the best care provider for your own painful knee or hip. This means that through activity and exercise you will learn to live with your osteoarthritis and mainly treat your own disorder.
Osteoarthritis school
The Osteoarthritis school is a 3 hours patient education program at NIMI for patients with hip or knee osteoarthritis lead by a physical therapist who is specialized in osteoarthritis. The focus of the Osteoarthritis school is on information, recommendations and group discussions. You will be thoroughly informed about osteoarthritis and associated disorders, as well as receive practical advice and learn activities you can do in order to master and prevent deterioration in the best possible way.
PLEASE NOTE THAT OSTEOARTHRITIS IS NOT A DANGEROUS DIAGNOSIS, ENTAILING THE END OF AN ACTIVE LIFE.
If you need further clarification, or if you have any questions, you can contact your physical therapist by telephone, e-mail or an appointment.
WELCOME, AND ALL THE BEST!
